Sports Book Debate: USA vs Offshore

Editor's note: Since we do not accept kickbacks from ANY sports book no matter where they are located, we are an objective, reliable voice in the debate. Be careful where you get your information.

The conversation about U.S. sports books versus offshore books is a nuanced dialogue that underscores the importance of competition, ethical conduct, and accountability in a rapidly evolving industry. There are advantages and disadvantages associated with betting through U.S.-based sports books versus their offshore counterparts. Our focus centers solely on licensed and regulated sports books, excluding illegal local bookies or underground betting syndicates.

Defining U.S. Sports Books and Offshore Sports Books: U.S.-based sports books encompass licensed operators like DraftKings, FanDuel, and BetMGM, available both online and through brick-and-mortar locations. On the other hand, offshore sports books, such as Pinnacle Sports, Bovada, MyBookie, Heritage Sports, Bookmaker and BetOnLine are also  licensed and regulated outside the U.S. and exclusively accessible online.

Exceptional Nevada Brick-and-Mortar Sports Books: Before delving into the broader conversation, a noteworthy exception must be granted to Nevada brick-and-mortar sports books, renowned for their unparalleled convenience, pricing, and betting variety. However, geographical limitation hampers widespread access, rendering these advantages exclusive to a subset of sports bettors. It’s crucial, nonetheless, to acknowledge Nevada's brick-and-mortar sports books, which stand in a league of their own.

Healthy Competition and Dual Perspectives on U.S. and Offshore Books: Personal preference plays a significant role when choosing between U.S. and offshore sports books. For professional sports bettors, maintaining accounts with both types of operators is advisable to maximize options. Emphasizing coexistence and competition between U.S. and offshore books benefits the market as a whole. Competition serves as an effective regulator and catalyst for innovation. Competition is a cornerstone of a thriving market, and it's essential to recognize that both U.S and offshore books contribute to a diverse landscape. The availability of multiple sports book options enhances the experience for sports bettors and promotes healthy business practices.

Examining Criticisms and the Perception of U.S. Book Superiority: Regrettably, some U.S.-based sports books have adopted marketing strategies that vilify their offshore counterparts, branding them as unreliable and even illegal. Certain interest groups have gone to extreme lengths, lobbying government authorities to eliminate foreign competition – a tactic far removed from fair competition. These groups have gone so far to suggest Americans should be imprisoned for placing bets at offshore sports books. This radical approach is based on the novel idea that sports betting transactions – unlike any other -- occur at the location of the payer rather than the merchant. And all for what? To eliminate their competition. For profit.

Pot Calling the Kettle Black: Ironically, some of the criticisms that U.S. sports books levied against offshore counterparts have been echoed in their own practices. Instances of misleading promotions, poor customer service, and dubious claims have emerged within the U.S.-based industry, highlighting the need for fair assessment.

A recent article by the Washington Post reported hundreds of complaints have been lodged by consumers against the three largest U.S. books. The article describes a scheme employed by BetMGM, which resulted in regulators forbidding the phrase “risk-free bet,” only to have BetMGM implement the replacement: “no-sweat bet.” The article also reported that BetMGM earned an “F” rating at the Better Business Bureau, a grade reserved for less than one percent of companies, according to the BBB. The Better Business Bureau notes the majority of complaints are for misrepresentation, fraud, dishonest dealings, delays in cashing out winnings, etc.

A Call for Ethical Business Practices: Never before have bookmakers – even the ones operating illegally – engaged in a more scandalous manner than some of the newly-licensed U.S. sports books. The level of trickery and deceit is unprecedented for our industry. The post-2018 era, marked by the decriminalization of sports betting by the U.S. Supreme Court, witnessed the emergence of U.S.-based sports books that, ironically, lecture against offshore diversification. Their questionable ethics and practices raise concerns about their commitment to transparency and fair play. True success in the sports betting industry should hinge on offering quality services at equitable prices. The pursuit of profit must not compromise integrity.

In conclusion, maintaining a competitive landscape encourages sports books to offer quality services at fair prices. The market's ability to regulate, reward, and penalize is an invaluable and powerful mechanism. In the face of unethical practices, competition emerges as a counterbalance. Striking this balance will be pivotal in shaping a sports betting environment that serves both bettors and the broader market ethically and sustainably.
