Many sports bettors avoid betting money lines against certain sports such as basketball or football because they are more familiar with and more comfortable using pointspreads. A pointspread can be regarded as a much simpler proposition. After all, if you're betting on the Buffalo Bills +3.5 points, you not only know what it takes to win the bet (Buffalo can either win the game outright or lose the game by fewer than 3.5 points), you also know how much you're going to win. When you risk 110, you win 100.

Money lines are not so simple as point spreads. Many bettors are confused by the odds, but if you're not using money lines on certain bets you are most likely costing yourself money.

For example, with Buffalo getting +3.5 points, they might be +150 on the money line. If you think the Bills should win the game outright, you should consider taking the +150 money line rather than laying the -110 point spread line. If Buffalo goes on to win the game, a $100 bet on the point spread wins only $91 while a $100 bet on the money line wins $150. Only two such money-line victories win more than three point spread victories.

In the chart at left, notice that when risking $100 the difference between winning when laying -250 and when laying -300 is less than $7, ($40.00 v. $33.33), but the difference between winning when you're getting +250 or when you're getting +300 is, of course, $50. Laying -400 wins $25, laying -500 wins $20 - a $5 difference - but the difference between winning when you're getting +400 and when you're getting +500 is, of course, $100.

We know that constantly changing your bet size causes you to lose money because it increases your break-even percentage. Therefore, when you always risk the same amount ("flat" betting) when using money lines, you're forcing the bookmaker to risk wildly different amounts against you. It is common knowledge than bookmakers try to keep their risk relatively equal. That's because it's a good idea. That's what YOU want to do with YOUR risk. Keep your own risk relatively equal ("flat betting").
